SUPER NINTENDO

How To Run SNES Games On Your Computer - In 4 Easy Steps

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was Nintendo's successful 16-bit home video game console first released in the USA on August 23, 1991. The SNES maintained a solid foothold in the video game market throughout its entire lifespan and consistent sales well beyond the beginning of the 32-bit era. In late 1994, sales of Donkey Kong Country for SNES overtook competing next-gen 32-bit competitors 3DO,  Atari Jaguar, Sega Saturn & even Sony Playstation for a time. This tutorial will show you how to use Zsnes, a dedicated SNES emulator, and install games to play on your PC. Mac users can get help here.

(Would you rather play SNES games in your browser with no downloads? Click Here.)

STEP #1: Download the emulator to your computer:

  • Go to the official Zsnes Home Page and get the latest Windows version.

  • Download the ZIP file and extract to a new folder anywhere you like (For instance: "C:\ZSNES\").

  • (Can't open ZIP files? Get 7-zip. It's FREE.)

STEP #2: Create a new folder for game ROMs:

  • Go to your new ZSNES directory, click the background and select: "New>Folder".

  • Name the new folder something appropriate, like: "ROMS" and press "Enter" to save.

  • While you're here, you may want to right-click "zsnesw.exe" and select: "Send To>Desktop (create shortcut)"

STEP #3: Download a game to play in your emulator:

There were nearly 800 video games released for the Super Nintendo. They are all available online in ROM form, but they are protected by copyright law making them illegal to download or store. Anyone could use a search engine to search "SNES" "ROMS" "game title" after browsing a Top 100 SNES Games list. However, in this tutorial we will download a free, legal homebrew game ROM, Classic Kong, that works the same way real SNES ROMs do in your emulator.

DISCLAIMER: It is not legal to download or store a Super Nintendo game ROM in many countries. Check the laws in your area on storing backup copies of video games for more info. Some games are known as abandonware. Abandoware is software whose copyright was held by a company which no longer exists. No legislation is currently in place to enforce so-called copyright infringement on abandonware. Homebrew games are made by amateur or independent developers and ARE legal to download. Keep it legal and have fun!

  • Go to the Classic Kong game info page: CLICK HERE.

  • Click the link to "download the rom".

  • Download "classickong.smc" to your new ROMS folder in your ZSNES directory.

STEP #4: Setup Zsnes & play your game:

SET CONTROLS:

  • Start Zsnes.

  • On the menu, click "CONFIG>INPUT" to see the INPUT DEVICE (controls) dialog:

  • The "SET" button will reset all controls to defaults.

  • The "SET KEYS" button will ask you to define each control in a sequence.

  • You can also just click on a control to then define it with a button press on your keyboard or game controller.

  • Press the "X" button on the INPUT DEVICE window to close the window and save your new settings.

LOAD YOUR GAME:

  • On the menu, click "GAME>LOAD" to pull up the ROM browser.

  • On the right, you should see the ROMS folder you made. Double-click it.

  • Now you are in your ROMS folder. (Your ROM browser will start here next time.)

  • Double-click your game (or press the "LOAD" button) to start the SNES emulation with the selected ROM.

  • Just press "Esc" to exit the emulator and go back to the Zsnes window.

  • That's it! You can now emulate the SNES!
